Fencing

How many people does it take...?

I know the subject sounded like the beginning of a joke but seriously!....

I need a 6’ fence post and panel replacing and am getting silly quotes. Is it possible for one person to do it on their own? I’m a fairly strong woman, is the trickiest part being able to carry the fence panel?

Thanks,

Sal

For one fence post and one panel of any size it will only require one tradesman. Anyone saying two or more labourers for this small job is either looking for ridiculously high fees or just plain lazy, either way they are not the tradesman for you.

The hardest part is removing the concrete from the ground, a sledgehammer is required to smash the old concrete to pieces.
Once done you can remove it and dig a new hole.
This is not the easiest job, but with time and determination - you will get it done.

Tools required: Sledgehammer
Pre- mixed concrete

Nails or Screws

Or you can hire me to help if you are near north London.

Hi
You have to take out all the old concrete and rotten post, set the new post in with postcrete(it goes hard in around 10 mins, screw one side in and prize the other side in with a gemy bar and screw in
It is quite hard on your own
Cheers ian

6ft post and 6ft fence
If your replacing a 6ft post and fence, then yes it is very easy to do on your own, as it means its wooden.
A 6ft post means it isnt going in the ground, as the post and fence is 6ft. Making it impossible to concrete it into the ground!
So i presume its going into a met post, spike, or met base, bolted to ground, or on a garden wall, 1m high.
Step 1 -screw 2 metclips to existing fence post
step 2-lift and slide new fence panel to connect with existing fence post. 4 screws each side.
step 3 screw 2 met clips onto new fence post
step 4 postion new fence post, lining up with fence panel
step 5 4 screws each side of panel
job done

If you were installing concrete or wooden posts into the ground;
The post would be minimum of 7ft to 9ft if it was being set in concrete in the ground, to allow for a 6ft panel.
We always use 9ft/2.7m concrete posts, to allow enough room for a 6ft/2m fence panel, and a concrete gravel board-150mm, which allows 1/2metre of post in the ground.
Using this setup of concrete post and gravel boards, the only thing that will need to be replaced is the fence panels.
We always add oak wedges to stop fence panels buffeting in the wind, its only movement that will allow a fence panel to break up, and using gravel boards the panels never sit in water so dont rot.

Yes fairly easy on your own as long as you can fit new panel to one exhisting post to support before you put new post in .

You would definitely need some help. An experienced fence builder finds it easier with someone to help keep things level so I wouldn’t recommend having you’re first try on your own

Allowing for collection of post, panel and post mix( or sand/ballast) i would say 2 men for 2 hours or so which should allow plenty for breaking up and digging up old concrete and lifting up into place and levelling new post and panel but any good tradesman should be checking the condition of the rest of your fence beforehand, just in case its all about to fail..Just saying! Probably not an easy job for anyone, man or lady without some tools.

I would say certainly no more than two people as the panels can be a bit tricky on your own plus it’s also safer with two people
