He has said there was no way of knowing the old plaster would blow, but surely experience would have told him if the surface is suitable or if it needs to be stripped back to the brick and started from scratch? This should be rectified by putting a few coats of pva over it first but if there was ever any distemper there it can still catch you out. To be honest, It sounds like he did everything right but when plaster goes off to fast it is a bit of a tell-tale that its either gone off plaster or the wall its going on to has not been properly prepped and the moisture is drawing back into the wall to fast. Its a tricky question to answer really without seeing it but if the top level of plaster has adhered to the wall, whatever is happening behind that is not really down to him although he prob should have advised you about it before he started, either way, i shouldn't think it will cause you any hassle in the future. If it is his coat that is live, its got to be stripped back everywhere it flakes off, pva'd again and redone or it will just flake off in chunks the next few years. Hope it works out. Tom
