Bathroom Fitting
Chipped tiles' edges all over the new bathroom
Hi All
Recently we had the whole bathroom redone. We've bought tiles from B&Q in reasonable price.
The builder fitted new bath, sink and toilet. During the work he realised that the flor wasn't levelled properly and he had to put new boards to make it even. Apparently it was difficult and he said he would need to charge us extra. But that's not the biggest problem.
瓷砖。首先在边缘,to trim it, the edges are chipped. Most of tiles around doors, windows and wherever he had to trim them to the right shape (not only the "L" shape, but just the simple straight cut).
Secondly, couple of corners has been chipped and yet for some reason these tiles still have ended up on the wall (rather than a bin).
Third problem is that we've noticed 4 tiles are actually broken.
We've explained we are not happy with the work. The builder wasn't happy with us and said it's the tiles. Overall we agreed that even if that was the case he should have told us during the job so we could decide if we want chipped tiles on the wall or a different solution. So he said he'll come to fix it. My questions to you are:
- is it possible to replace some of tiles without damaging these which seat around them?
- shall I worry about new bath? And floor? Surely when you take tiles off the wall they may damage bath's surface and the builder will have to stand in the actual bath to replace some.
- is there any other solution for chipped edges (some sort of paint maybe?) so we could do it without replacing tiles? Some chips are like 4mm. Most 1-2mm.
- would anyone take the job to correct his mistakes? I'm concerned that he may not be able to do it proparly and I would prefer someone new to fix it. If yes, what cost am I looking at?
I will highly appreciate your answers.
Regards
Jo

Hi Jo,
How does that saying go "a bad workman always blames his tools" or in this case, the tiles!
I should imagine he is just using the wrong tile cutter for the type of tile.
replacing broken tiles is absolutely something that can be done without damaging surrounding tiles/furnishings. However, all depends who is doing the work!
As for price... depends massively on your location and size/quantity of tiles that need replacing. ;-)

It sounds like the "builder" is not a tiler, I have been tiling for 20 years and not yet come across a tile that can not be cut neatly with the correct tools.
In answer to your other questions
yes it is possible to replace individual tiles but if the wall is a plasterboard wall it could lead to big holes and extra work
he would have needed to stand in the bath to tile the wall so with a couple of thick sheets and some cardboard around the edges its easy enough to protect the baths surface
No solution for the chipped edges that is going to make it look like a 5 year old tiled it
I am sure if you post the job on this site you will have a selection of willing tilers.
My advice would be ask another tiler to see if he can cut the tiles without any damage, if this can easily be done then you should be taking the builder to small claims court for damages unless he wants to refund the cost of the labour and the tiles.
Good luck
