Kitchen Fitting

Painting kitchen cupboards

I have Wickes discontinued kitchen. I want to replace doors to freshen it up. After hours talking with Wickes about replacing cupboards (they won't come out to look at it either as I want help with difficult spaces, and I also rang different people at Wickes and went to their shop twice), we established the cupboard doors they now supply are all 1cm taller, so I can't get Wickes doors! And can't see where else to get doors to fit. My door height is 72cm of various widths, including drawers.

The next option is repainting all doors, side panels and carcasses myself, or getting someone else to do it. I'm considering doing it myself with a roller.

I live alone with no kids (less damage possibilities through frantic living). The cupboards are a creamy colour with a light wood effect currently and I'm thinking white gloss or maybe satin. Although I think marina paint is just available in gloss. I'm on a budget.

Here's my plan, please adjust it to what you think is better.

1. Lightly sand

2. Apply white marina gloss paint (heard it is more durable on TV) , with a roller. Without using primer because I'm hoping it won't need it. Buy from Amazon as marina white paint. I'm not aware of any brand that is good.

3. Potentially apply a water based varnish top coat. Do I need that with a marina paint, maybe the gloss is hardy enough?

Hi @green tree properties
Actually the 0.5cm difference would mean the door is too short, and although one could say you wouldn't see it on the top Cupboards. You list certainly would! I notice if things are not right, and 0.5 would definitely shoe in my eyeline. I have a studio flat so I'd also be on the sofa looking at it all day. You can't miss a door that is 0.5cm too short at the top of the carcass. Also I wonder if the hinge holes and hinge plates would line up given the door is not the same size as the previous door.

Hello,

Firstly, repainting kitchens is a real hassle and should avoid. There will be bits of the kitchen that will need to come off. So you need to be confident when putting it all back together.

I would recommend you take as many doors, drawer fronts and end panels off. Clean them thoroughly remove any grease and build up.

Apply primer (good quality) Zinsser BIN or similar. Allow primer to completely dry and reapply if nessecessary.

Finish with furniture paint quality or something very hard wearing with a fine roller. This and priming will help preventing the paint coming off, particularly on cupboard doors as they will touched a lot once they have been painted and rehung.

Alternatively there are lots of place now that refurbish kitchen. Might be worth a look before committing to paint.

Hope this helps

Hi ,

Most of the kitchen fronts (standard size) are 715mm tall so you should be fine with them .

Try to check different suppliers, bq or howdens they should fit .

我可以代替你的门你需要的大小
If you have vinyl doors the paint could peel after a while
为the cost of painting them you could get new doors for around the same price
More hassle to to paint them
