Extend above existing room

I’ve just bought a house with a double garage that has already been converted into a living area which is nice. I was thinking about extending above it, if I did so would the ceiling have to be taken off in the existing room? I’d like to extend but don’t want to ruin whats already there? Thanks I’m advance!

Having investigated, the ceiling is already attached to the roof joists, so will the ceiling have to come out completely or can they avoid by altering the joists slightly.

Not necessarily.
The ceiling is hung on slimmer ceiling joists as these are not expected to bear any weight from above.
Any rooms created above will need to have their floor planks situated on thicker floor joists which are designed to take the weight of furniture, etc.
Your Builder may well be able to fit the floor joists between the existing ceiling joists, or there may be a significant void over the ceiling joists into which the floor joists can be set.
Make sure that your Builder has a good idea of what is expected of him/her and that you have the reationale behind all decisions explained to you.

It ought to be quite possible for your Builder to set new deeper joists between your existing ceiling joists to give you the depth of floor required.
But please bear in mind this answer is given without the benefit of actually seeing the ceiling in question. You really would be best advised to get a Builder to come and have a look to put your mind at rest.
