Builder charging 20% extra - normal?

Is it normal for a builder to charge 20% extra for preliminaries / time/ admin /supervision etc? It amounts to about 3600, of which 600 ish covers toilet hire and trips to the tip. He has bought and arranged delivery of most materials, but I have also done some.

All his other prices on the invoice are reasonable and accounted for in my own estimated figures. He is VAT registered so the 20% VAT is also accountable.

He is a good reputable builder but the additional 20% for admin etc seems quite steep, especially as I've done a lot of the ground work for our project. Is this normal?

If it is a big building company then it's to be expected, but if its a one or two man outfit then it's abit steep.

You don’t pay 1 penny more than what is written on the quote

Charging an extra % is standard. This allows for any wastage and minor hiccups on the way.
A builders final price should have already accounted for toilet hire and tip trips. If these come to more than the builder has allowed for, then unless there have been any deviations from the original quote it’s bad estimation on the builders part.
