How to smooth out poorly-filled walls with lumps and bumps
Any advice appreciated. I'm not sure how to approach some messy walls in one room - years ago, the surface was torn and exposed that papery surface in some big sections across several walls in one room. those patches were filled with polyfilla I think but not very evenly, leaving some sections that don't feel smooth at all, look uneven and protrude from the wall.
I struggled to sand down the lumps in one previous attempt but maybe didn't have decent enough sander. Is there a particular way I should approach these to try and get them smooth and even again - sand with a bit more vigour as much as possible, then maybe a better application of skim repair?

It really depends on the extent of the damage to the finish coat on the walls.
If you plan on painting then it's best to get a plasterer in to do a complete reskim.
It will save a lot of time and hassle.
Patching in with filler will never look good once painted.

The time it takes to fill and sand is not viable. Most walls take 4 hours to
glue and plaster and is far less dusty...

Hi. I would certainly re plaster the full wall. If there are any loose parts of plaster on the wall they should be knocked off and bonding coat applied. You could even knock off the bumpy parts If they are that bad. But defo a re skim would sort your problem

Hi.i would suggest a re skim.scrape down all loose and rough parts of the wall.paint on thistlebond to your wall and leave it to set/dry for 12 hours.this can all be done yourself to save money.get a plasterer to skim wall for you as you will want a professional finish.
