Remove lawn and lay gravel
I have a small area 3x4.5m in the front of the house which has lawn/turf on it.
I want to put gravel instead of lawn/turf hoping that is it less maintenance and also have pots of plants over the gravel to create a small potted garden.
I have dug out the lawn and the surface is slightly off and not level. The top soil is OK but has lot of stones and rubble (new build estate). I am thinking that the soil underneath is fairly compact and strong. A roller to flat/level should be enough and provide a good surface for the gravel.
There are going to be no cars on this gravel and only pots of plants with people standing on it to water plants when required.
滚动土壤后,I plan to cover it with weed membrane and bought a gravel grid to place on top of the membrane to ensure that gravel stays in place
Is this enough or do I need more stronger sublayer?
Please advise if I have missed something or not doing it properly.

For that size area I would advise two bulk bags of scalpings/sub-base MOT/mill waste, or whatever it is called in your area.
A local builder's merchant will know what it is called in your area or you could get it from the likes of B&Q where it is called sub-base MOT.
Level this out and then use a wacker plate on it. You can hire them for a few pounds for half a day from most hire places. Go over it several times and get it back within 4 hours for the best price. Check with the place that they will do this four hour hire. If you are just a few minutes late they often try to charge more!
The correct order is the soil, membrane, scalpings/sub-base MOT/mill waste, gravel grid, gravel.
Try to get the scalpings/sub-base MOT/mill waste and gravel as close to the location as possible, it's heavy stuff and not something to try to rush. Expect a bag to take an hour each to empty, move and put where you want it.
Stay hydrated and fed, it's hard work if you are not used to it!

Hello.
If you want a good job, then it's advisable to put in a sub-base, recycled hard core will do the job you will need and at around £10 a ton the cheper option, mot type 1 is the best sub-base you will get but a little more money, invest in a ton and that will cover your area, working on the basis its little over 10m2,compact this with a waker as on a new build the ground can be fairly unstable, after this process use a permeable tec membrane, this will allow water to shift through the sub-base more efficiently, don't put the membrane under the sub-base, you will get weeds!!!! After that a ton and half of gravel will do to cover your area, hope this info goes some way to help, all the best team rs paving and landscaping (Ben).
