Kitchen Fitting

Worktop set too high at 940mm integrated kitchen

Hi my husband has fitted our kitchen and set the worktop at 940mm, to include 165mm plinth, 15mm for flooring and then the base units. He was told by the kitchen supplier that the plinths are designed to fit as standard rather than be cut. It was only when I felt that worktop seemed slightly high that we researched and saw standard was 910mm with plinths to be cut. So freaking out now, although we have no appliances to go underworktops as we have integrated f/f and dishwasher, eyelevel oven, the top units will still be higher and the worktop looks slightly high. But it cant be changed now can it?

You should either firstly lay the floor im assuming you are having tiles then you would set your base units in at 870-872mm high from the floor then lazer level round the kitchen where the units will be this will give you room for the plinths and that also ensures that your end panels can be cut to size if needed then your work top can go on top or you can just set them 870-872mm from the floor and tile after wards this just means you may need to rip down the plinths a little hope this helps

Hi,

If I'm brutally honest, I don't think your husband has done anything majorly wrong. The only problem would be that if you were having freestanding appliances (say, washing machine or dishwasher) at a height of 940mm to the worktop, would mean a standard appliance height of 850mm would leave a gap of around 40 or 50mm from the top of the appliance to the underside of the worktop. A bit much, but it's not relevant, as your appliances are integrated. As for the plinths being cut down, that's something I'm assuming most kitchen fitters like myself do on occasion, especially if the floor is slightly uneven and the client hasn't asked for the area to be screeded beforehand.

Hope that puts your mind at ease!
