What to expect from a good roofer prior to works

We had some terrible repair work done recently to our roof and are having to hire another roofer to now replace the valleys which were done very badly the first time.
We want to make sure that we do everything properly this time. We have found a roofer who has quoted and comes with lots of references from local people. What should we reasonably expect him to provide before works start?
He says that it's not standard practise to provide a guarantee on repair work, although he's happy to sign something if we draft it to confirm that he will rectify any potential problems with his work in the unlikely event that they should arise.
He says that he doesn't have a standard contract that he would normally provide - is this right?
He isn't requesting any payment upfront, only on completion and as I say he comes very highly recommended.
Any tips or advice to help us avoid getting burnt twice?!
Thank you in advance!

Hi,
I think that if you are happy with the new roofers references then you will have to trust him. There is nothing unusual about him saying he cant really provide a guarantee for repair work, this is standard throughout the industry so don't be put off by that. If he has said that he will rectify any problems with his work should they arise then he sounds to me like he is an honourable and trustworthy tradesmen. I would have every confidence in using him.
Hope this helps.

He should guarantee his work when it comes to your roof, if your a good roofer you will guarantee your work, you should get a written contract.
