Prepping ceiling for plaster

Hi, I have artex on my ceiling which we wanted plastered over, my plasterer has just arrived to put on bonding agent but has said the ceiling needs 2 coats of emulsion first or new plaster will fall off, what I don't really understand is that the ceiling already has been painted (although around 10 years ago) is this the issue? Does it need to be fresh paint??

When plastering over a Artex ceiling a coat of PVA is required , This will be enough for plaster to stick.

Really this is a 1st I've heard of doing this.
He needs to take off the high points with his hardwall plane and pva 1/2 coats depending on how much its sucking in,
Then 1 thick coat of multi finish to level out the plaster on the artex then once flattened out apply 2nd coat and trowel flat wait till it gets firm to touch sponge float over plaster wet trowel twice and hard trowel and finished. note not all spreads sponge there work. Hey what do I know I've only been plastering for 19yrs.

I always use thistle bonding or 'blue grit' as we call it. It gives much better adhesion than PVA and particularly when bonding is being applied (which is heavy). It is expensive stuff (around £55 a for a 10ltr tub) but your plasterwork isn't coming off in a few years time.
